Asia Argento was raised in Rome by a film-maker and actor family. Both professions she pursued her own. When she was nine, Asia made her film debut in the role of Sergio Citti in Sogni e bisogni. In 1988, she played her role as the main character in Cristina Comencini's first film, Zoo (1988), and was in the ensemble of The Church (1989), directed by Michele Soavi. The following year she played Nanni Moretti's daughter in Red Wood Pigeon (1989) (also directed by Moretti). Close Friends (written and directed by Michele Placido) was when Asia's acting career really began to take off. The roles she played changed from young roles to becoming more mature. The film was given a positive review during the Cannes International Film Festival. She has made three films with her father, Trauma, The Stendhal syndrome and Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom of the Opera is her third film that she has made alongside her father, the others being Trauma and The Stendhal SyndromeAsia's intense, dramatic style was well-used in Giuseppe Piccioni's Condannato A Nozze. In 1993, she was a co-star in the film Perdiamoci di Via in which she portrayed Arianna a physically handicapped girl. It was a complex, challenging role that won her the David di Donatello award for the best actress . Patrice Chereau directed her in Queen Margot, where she was a major character. She worked again with Michel Piccoli on Peter Del Monte's Traveling Companion in 1995, giving her a second David di Donatello role as well as an award from Grolla D'oro. Asia began her career in 1994 as a director when she made two short films: Prospettive (1996), a document on her father as well as Abel/Asia (1998), a film about the cult film maker Abel Ferrara. The latter was awarded an award at the Rome Film Festival. Asia started directing her first feature film in 1999 with Scarlet Diva (2000). The film also featured her as the principal actress, and the author of the film's script. The film released May 2000 both in Italy and across the globe. The film was honoured by the Williamsburg Festival of Brooklyn, New York. Anna Lou, the first of two daughters she has was born in the month of January 2001. The actress starred alongside Jean-Marc Barre as Jean-Marc Barr in The Red Siren, directed by Olivier Megaton. In 2003 she was in Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen's action thriller. Asia has also written several short stories which were published in a variety of magazines.
